How to Donate Your Old Computer?

With as fast as computer processor manufacturers are generating bigger and better chipsets, it's no wonder why millions of computers are sent to the dump as people upgrade every few years. Before you do the same, please think twice, because there are many uses for an older computer beyond taking up space at the local landfill.

Here are a few tips that you should remember and help other people understand!

  1. Start with your favorite cause or charity, or perhaps a local school. Call their administrative office and ask if they would be interested in your donation. When doing so, keep the following in mind:

    • Ask about any specific configuration/system requirements they might have.

    • Explain your system configuration and be honest about its condition.

    • Never just assume any organization will take a donation. DO NOT just drop the computer off without confirming that they want it in the first place.

    • If you would like to make a donation for tax purposes, check with an accountant to make sure it will benefit you. Then make sure the organization is qualified to receive tax-deductible donations. In most cases, an older computer will have little or no tax benefit.

    • Before delivering your system, be sure to clear any programs, sensitive information, or documents so that they have a fresh system.

  2. If you have no preference, there are several non-profit clearinghouses to match donors with good causes.     www.cristina.org , www.sharetechnology.org , www.recycleapc.com www.technology-exchange.net

  3. If you are interested in participating in a global donations program, the World Computer Exchange provides computers for the world's youth in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
